Typically wooden housing. Though that can vary. From stone, sand stone, and other natural things nearby such as ice in cold locations.
What it does:l Housing allows a few features. New characters can now spawn in zones with housing if you allow it. Housing is also required for NPCs to exist.
Houses have 100 health regardless of what material they are.
For RP purposes, houses come fitted with the basic things. Of course, primitive to the time that is. A bathroom of some sorts, kitchen, bed rooms, and a basement. Anything else that sounds normal like of a few windows, ofc.
